Networks

Join in our social asset mapping exercise and link interests, abilities and time to volunteer opportunities.

Each of us is a centre point of a web of home and workplace connections. We share knowledge, skills and abilities wherever our interests take us.

With intention, we can build a powerful, influential and capable network.

It's all about who you don't know...yet!

Activities & Ideas

01

Apps & Tech

Did you know that IT students—and others—need project ideas to learn and contribute to a better world?

Maybe you have skills to volunteer yourself—but you don't have to be a techie to dream up ideas and help make them happen!

App Ideas

Historical tour of Oaklands Rise and the Woonerf area stretching from Cook to Oaklands Park and beyond.

Horticultural tour illuminating the benefits of xeriscape (no/low water) gardening and highlighting native species and other garden features in the area.

All abilities tours introducing fragrant and tactile elements to support all ability enjoyment of the area.

Tech-beyond Ideas

Coloured light pattern projections illuminating night-time walks lessening light pollution while creating beauty and interest on the street(s).

Solar-powered art-objects positioned as traffic calming elements: light through laser-cut patterns cast around the objects.

What out of this world idea is just begging to be made real on the Woonerf? Reach out!

02

Building the Woonerf

Well proven in the Netherlands and a number of countries in Europe with millions of people living in "people-priority" zones, the Woonerf is a lesser-known and counterintuitive concept in North America. Urban planning since the introduction of the motor vehicle has placed the personal vehicle, and the movement of millions of them, at the top of the list of infrastructure priorities.

Woonerven and their international cousins, Home Zones, Shilaya Zona, Zone Residentiales, Living Streets, etc. emerged when Dutch traffic engineers were charged to reduce risk of harm on residential streets. It turns out, the typical interventions do not always work, are costly (sometimes too costly to correct) and often put people at the back end.

Establishing a Woonerf where there are no regulations to support it can be a challenge. But, we're doing it! And the evolution in planning happening world-wide is making its way to Victoria. We are grateful for the support of Council and staff.

Activities include research; building relationships among interest groups and individuals; developing design ideas and reaching out for donated stone, expertise and equipment.

A lot gets done through unexpected, naturally occurring opportunities.

Keep the Woonerf in its broadest sense in mind and you'll find lots of ways to engage—and invite others to build our success.

03

Communications

We started out with a personal mailing list, then as interest grew, to a secure Mailchimp list. Periodic newsletters (thanks to Editor & Web-ster, John O) have been popular, but are a LOT of work for one volunteer. So, we've adjusted to less time consuming single focus mail-outs and calls to action when needed.

Our social media —especially Instagram and Facebook—are thriving thanks to Alison B. Photos add so much to understanding the Woonerf - share yours and tag /oaklandsrise with inspiration!

Currently, we also have a great Pinterest page with links to examples of Woonerven world-wide, as well as illustrations of features of interest. John O maintains this and our Twitter profile at this time and would be happy to share this activity.

Volunteers interested in taking the newsletter to the next level, or creating some form of two-way communication tool, are very welcome!

04

Visual Identity

Key to a successful Woonerf is public awareness that you are "in the zone." Lacking a regulatory underpinning for this European concept, we've taken a few approaches to establishing a visual identity for the Oaklands Rise adaptation of the Woonerf.

Happily, with support of the City of Victoria, part of that identity is signage. Currently, there is a "Pedestrian Priority" sign at the intersections of Kings Road and both Capital Heights and Cedar Hill Road. It is an adaptation of the international Woonerf sign (though Victoria's car is a little too prominent) and includes elements that we have in the logo John O designed for the Oaklands Rise Woonerf and featured on this website.

05

Social

Everyone can help with positive & informative posts to favourite social media sites by tagging /oaklandsrise or sending items for consideration on our group Instagram, Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Stepping away from the screen and into life on the woonerf is what it is all about. So beyond social media, we aim to find ways to be together in "place."

Sometimes that is a wave among dog-walkers or a chat with folks at Garry Oak Benchs. Other times, it is a planned event such as a backyard concert, a street party, or community potluck.

Do you have an idea for a gathering? We'll help you make it happen!

06

Ever Onward!

Momentum can be measured in many ways.

A mailing list that has grown from 21 contacts to (at last count) 252 is one very positive indicator.

So, too, are engagements tht take us forward without bringing us all together. During the Pandemic period, two planned potlucks were cancelled out of consideration of those most vulnerable. So, we reached out to our network beyond the Woonerf to make things happen.

Student Engagement Projects

Working in 4 teams of 5, UVIC permaculture students conducted analyses of soil, drainage, wind, shade and sun to inform 2 designs for the upper, western portion of our 15 block area and 2 for the lower, eastern portion. Reports from these academically supervised projects include identification of existing plant life, recommendations for horticultural development, as well as features that enhance placemaking along the Woonerf promenade.

Another project focused on extending the 2018 Public Survey to support longitudinal data as well as new information drawn from lessons learned since that early survey. We plan on another public survey to be issued in 2023.
